Navy Blue

After arriving to work a few weeks ago, someone stopped me in the hall and asked, “Did you bike here?” “No. Why?” I said. The man just pointed to my left pant leg which had gotten tucked into my black sock. I quickly un-tucked it and then noticed the sock wasn’t black…it was navy blue! I had two different socks on. The guy was already walking away, but I’m sure he noticed that too. He just had pity on me, I’m sure he had been there before. Who hasn’t? Everyone has mixed up a navy blue sock with a black one or wore navy blue pants with a black belt. There are endless combinations. Well, there’s at least three, but the point is that navy blue does more harm than good.

So lets just get rid of all navy blue clothing items. It’s too hard to tell the difference in the dim morning light, but embarrassingly easy in the fluorescent light of the office. Then you’re spending the rest of the day sitting on your right ankle or un-tucking your dress shirt enough to cover your navy blue belt.

Most of you are saying, “Why did you buy navy blue socks in the first place?” I didn’t, I don’t even know where they came from. They invade my sock drawer like a plague. I also have like 30 different styles of dress socks that don’t have matches.  I don’t know where they came from either, but I match them with the closest pair. It’s like 30 interracial marriages in my drawer.

I guess that’s how I should look at it. Next time someone asks why I’m wearing two different colored socks, I’ll tell him I’m promoting civil rights.

  1. brilliant! but who seriously owns a navy blue belt? I think you’d better watch out and say that navy blue accessories should be eliminated — because the navy blue blazer is quite possibly the corner stone of looking like you belong on a ship or at a prep school.

  2. My dad just got the sharpest navy blue suit (so dark, it’s nearly black) and I went to a wedding last weekend where the groomsmen all wore navy blue, and I gotta say I disagree with you on this one, Nick. Navy blue is back (say that ten times fast) and it’s looking SHARP!
